Billboard’s tally of Jackson’s 50 top titles, which features songs from his complete catalog, including solo recordings, collaborations and classic hits with the Jackson 5, was compiled from songs’ chart performances on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. Songs were ranked based on an inverse-point system, i.e., weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least.
“Say Say Say” earns the list’s coveted top spot as Jackson’s best-performing Hot 100 chart single. His duet with Paul McCartney led the list for six weeks beginning in December 1983. The pair also ranks at No. 10 with “The Girl Is Mine,” the first single from Jackson’s “Thriller,” the best-selling studio album of all-time (29 million), according to the Recording Industry Association of America. The cut peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for three weeks in January 1983.
