Michael Jackson has reclaimed the top spot on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, as his legendary album Thriller returns to No. 1 on the chart dated May 16.
The resurgence follows the enormous success of the Michael biopic, which has sparked a major increase in streaming across Michael Jackson’s catalogue worldwide.
Originally released in November 1982, Thriller is recognised by Guinness World Records as the best-selling album of all time and remains the highest-certified studio album in U.S. history by the Recording Industry Association of America.
According to Luminate, Thriller earned 62,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the tracking week of May 1-7, marking a 36% increase from the previous week. Streaming accounted for the majority of the total, generating more than 50 million official on-demand audio and video streams across the album’s tracks.
The achievement gives Thriller its 38th total week at No. 1 on the chart, and remarkably, its first return to the top position since 1984.
More than four decades after its original release, Thriller continues to prove why it remains one of the most influential and enduring albums in music history.
